Art Class: Introduction to Sewing

Phew! I had just finished packing the resources for a new project. In a few more weeks, the Primary Six students will start their sewing project. Let me share some ways of distributing the coloured threads without getting them all tangled up. In my video, I explained how to remove the threads from the kitchen rolls and putting back when needed. The children will be using burlap as a canvas for their sewing project.

Art Class: Making a Book

Hi teachers, building on our previous lesson, my students will be making a DIY book this week. The characters in their stories will be based on the puppets that they have made. For their online learning, they'll also be required to summarise their story in one sentence. I look forward to reading their stories!

Artventure: DIY Dress

School has started on 2 June and I'm happy to have completed some art projects during my break. Our school vacation is actually in June but due to the current situation, there was a swop to extend the circuit beaker. My favourite project has to be making my own dress using paper patterns since all the non-essential shops are still closed. It felt really good to make your own clothes. I bought the batik fabric in Bali last year and I knew I had to make something really useful. Not my usual colour scheme for work but I think it's a possible teaching tool when the time comes.

It sure took a lot of time to make and I've learnt to take note of more details when looking at clothes😊. Besides the type of materials used, things like the type of stitch for different areas, the width/ tension of the stitch also depends on the type of fabrics used. Even though the dress looks alright, since I don't have a serger machine, the interior of the dress don't look professionally made. If I were to make this again, I will use a 50cm invisible zip and stitch my pockets nearer to the waist.

Art Class: Pixel Art on Window Panels

The children were using the window panels as canvas. They used coloured sticky notes to create an artwork. I designed a worksheet for them to work on the calculations before transferring the digital image to the actual work. They had to take measurements of the window panels first and divide the length and width per unit (per sticky note) to count the number of sticky notes they needed. The image looked rather simple but they had to be quite precise and persist as they learn to work with a paper plan first and not trial and error.

Art Class: Puppets Making

Hi! Here is the what the students will be making this week. I introduced a short video about Ventriloquist, Darci Lynne. Then, we move on this. I have plans for students to create a puppet show when school reopens in June. I'll see what they come up with. I've explored with various video-making apps and I think Inshot is so far the best free app I've tried.

Art Class: e-stickers

I've been using the Student Learning Space (SLS) for posting instructions and videos for my lessons. This week, I tried using the Bitmoji app to give 'stickers' to my students. In Image A, you'll see an array of students' works on a page. The students can comment on their post or others' post. As a teacher, I can also choose to post images or text. In this case, there is still a step before we post that Bitmoji picture. I have to import all my pictures from the app to Google site and from the site, I have to copy the image and paste it on students' posts. To make things more convenient, I've bookmarked the google site page. I've also realised that SLS site do not support GIF file so my images will be not animate.

I think the students will not receive a notification when someone post a comment so I guess I will inform them to check with other means.

Scroll all the way down to see another tip that I've discovered!

*Updates* I've realised that my students cannot see the e-stickers! I'll show them my screen back in school then.

Tip number 2: To monitor my students' work, I used the Class Dojo app but some parents might not respond and I would need to text them with my mobile. I'm not sure about other devices but I'm using an Android and to text a new contact not in my current list, you have to save the new contact first before messaging them. It doesn't work like SMS where you can just key in a number and message directly. So...I used this site with Whatsapp Web and you can message a new contact directly without saving their numbers.

HBL: Art Kit

Hi! These Art Kits were prepared for my students to bring home before the school closes for Home-Based Learning (HBL). I gave them to my lower primary students from 11 classes. As I didn't have time to pack for all, I brought some materials to their classes and we packed them together. Most of the materials were easily accessible but they might not be be found in the children's homes.

I have included coloured corrugated cardboards, coloured papers, origami papers, googly eyes, coloured yarn, CD-rom, elastic bands, coloured sequins and pom-poms.

Check back to see what we're making!
